The Receptionists was a twee band from Poughkeepsie, New York made up of three Vassar College students. After the band’s breakup in 1997, their former label Ba Da Bing! put together a compilation of both released and unreleased material from the band’s catalog. The Last Letter released in 1999, which combined the 1995 Memo EP (minus “Drinking Fountain”), two tracks made for various artists releases, and six previously unreleased songs.
The Receptionist’s approach to twee is frail in sound and artistic in spirit, with minimalist instrumentation and abstract and surrealist lyrics. Songs seemingly begin tone deaf and off beat, but quickly swell into miniature ballads of love both blooming and lost. There’s a charm to the lack of rhythm section, the wailing accordion, and the one note guitar lines. The Last Letter has a magic to it, similar to the Raincoats’ self titled album.
